  • so real late last night as I was finally tying the bow around this fat ass christmas gift, I was gettin REAL nervous cause I know I say some pretty savage shit about the most beloved child in video games right now. But I spent a LOT of time on this vid (as you know) and rewrote it and kept editing it down until I could fully stand by every word. I think my only regret is not giving more attention to all of the things that Red Dead 2 does SUPER GOOD (visuals, writing, characters, music, D'Angelo) but I guess that would kinda go against the thesis of the vid. Anyways, just wanted to say that I care about this vid a lot and I hope you like it and I hope it leads to lots of interesting conversations. I'm super interested to hear your responses either in this gamer chat or on Twitter. Thanks for watching and have a lovely holiday :) xoxo - Jacob

    • I can see how someone would hate this game on consoles, on PC and stuff it was brilliant. MEGA Rant: What you essentially want is Battlefield 1 levels of polish AND gameplay. It's too much to have everything actually exist and be accounted for, but then again, the fuzzy side of your brain still digs that insane polish. If you want that kind of thing where while gameplay takes precedence, polish is still a significant priority and making it look and feel good, then GTA 5 is your game. Idk why you'd expect the same from RDR2. RDR1 even well delivered on that aspect. There's the thing, no gamer can decide what level of intuitiveness or lackthereof and polish they desire. You can have a game like Red Dead Revolver or even GTA 3, that insanely abstracts as much as it possibly can, is that too far? You have RDR2 that avoids abstracting anything as much as possible aside from obviously the scale of the map, is that too much? It's definitely a personal preference thing Jake, like, you definitely don't come across like a guy who'd enjoy a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance. And that's fine. But in my personal opinion, I'm glad more and more people are more readily accepting well made but very very in-depth games that account for everything LIKE RDR2 and KC:D. The market was razor thin to near non existent before those games came out with essentially niche titles like Rainbow Six 3, to a market where games like Siege, ArmA, RDR2, KC:D and so on and so on can thrive. Not to mention when you get past say chapter 2, things do pick up significantly and it becomes a LOT more gamelike. Nevertheless I still pretty much agree with you on every other game out there aside from this one, respect you and I wish you all the best.

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who played the first game 10 years ago, who even likes the second game... in fact, we know of some people STILL playing rdr1 multiplayer! Which I find to be insane tbh. But every single tryhard, every good player, alllll the people we’ve met from the first game and even GTA Online...... NO ONE LIKES OR EVEN PLAYS RDR2, and it’s the “best game of 2018”? Two years later and no one plays it... even the twitch viewer numbers when you compare RDR2 to GTA, right now today, it’s out of this world how few people care about Red dead 2 It’s incredible how bad the game is.

But in the set you dont have too go looking for something and youll never be lost and confused.

  • This is why I didn't bought any new games on release and the only simplest explanation would be because they are flawed in many ways and not worth a single minute of my time. Next to this the trigger point was > GTA4 = Main protagonist is a Serb and lived in Russia at one point working for the mob. He doesn't speak neither of these languages same issue with others because ROCKSTARGAMES WAS A FUCKING IDIOT WHO COULDNT FIND PEOPLE WHO HAPPEN TO SPEAK THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGES TO VOICE THE FUCKING CHARACTERS. The small map, depressing town filled with npcs who all seem like they are on crack, the game bugs, glitches so as awful boat seasick driving was a nail in the cofin at the very start of the game enough not to touch it. Plus the later "updated" PC versions didn't even work. So fuck GTA4. NEXT > GTA5 aka GTAV and V stands for virgins because those are the majority who play it, neglected children to be more specific. Another uninspired outdated pile of dogshit with the worst characters possible and scripted missions that make zero sense to a normal person. Maybe if you are high as shit and a masochist maybe you can find enjoyment in this toxic waste. NEXT > RDR2 was glitched to hell and back and was enough reason not to buy it. I don't support "games" that are unfinished flawed in many ways and require downloads etc. With that said I will stop mentioning the other releases. Lets just say that from classic inspirational awesome creative action games RSG went to the opposite of no effort just material for neglected lost children and mentally unstable adults. The only exception I made at one point was buying GTA5 for 5$ code when I found the time to download it and to play some races with a friend and occasional FiveM but again local and with selected friends. And whenever others asked is it worth for to join I just say pirate the damn game because you are already paying with your time wasting on it.

  • Jakey basically tells us on chapter one that the mission design is outdated since it's mostly restricted type of B, and the open world is A. But why is B bad? It's more of a certain story type of thing not fcking breath of the wild. I enjoyed the slow pacing, and even though truly some times it gets too restrictive in missions and that its treating you like a toddler, the open world just does the complete opposite. It's not supposed to be just A or B. Rdr2 created some sort of C

    • @Μαριος Σουλτατης What bothers me the most is that by the title and the way jakey presents his points, he makes it sound like this is an objective fact, that rockstar's design _is_ outdated, even though many of the points brought up by himself point to the fact that this whole video is _extremely_ subjective. What if I'm the type of player that likes to do what the game tells them to do? What if I'm the type of player that doesn't try to break the game to see what happens? Am I screwed then? He already mentions PLENTY of games within this video that play like he wants rdr2 to play, so just go an play those! Rockstar didn't fail at making the game jakey wanted, they just never wanted to make that game in the first place.

    • @V man yeah like I said o watch a tone of westerns and honestly less than a handful of them have not been slow paced. You're right, most of the people complaining either never watched a western before or try to play the game with maximum dishonour (robbing trains kind of feels like a glitch when the lawmen somehow know it's you immediately and they also know it's you shoot up a town long enough. even with a mask on. Also if you just tap someone with your horse sometimes you can get a wanted poster. Some of that stuff can be frustrating).

    • I swear people who complain about game being boring because riding on horses most of the time, probably never watched classic western movies or stuff. Each mission feels so scripted and slow, you just go to point A, and go to point B while listening the NPC talking, clear the enemy and repeat. Its like playing Uncharted in open world game. Everyone criticized game like Death Stranding being a walking simulator, and rdr2 is the definition of riding simulator, the time you go to the mission are longer than you actually playing the mission, and also didnt give you the freedom or creativity. This game is 10/10 on graphics, story and other techninal achievements but 5/10 on level design

  • What made me so mad in this game and just ruined all of my fun was on certain missions, they'd just swap your weapons out to whatever R* thought you should be using instead. There's a certain mission in Saint Denis where you go raid a mansion, I started the mission equipped with my two revolvers, one of the repeaters, and the semi auto shotgun I found in a cabin. Firefight starts and I'm equipped with a different repeater, and my shotgun has become one of the long-range rifles. As if I need two rifles. Then later in the job, one of the gang gives you a double barrel shotgun anyway. LIKE JUST LET ME KEEP MY FIRST SHOTGUN FFS

I get what you're asking for, since the rest of the game gives the feeling that such events should be possible, but implementing them is a whole other ordeal. The game is just a show that makes it feel like there is a realistic simulation happening, but it's all hard-coded, and the game can't predict all of these outcomes. Generalising events is painful as hell.

And open world and this new way of story telling in games are new relative to other genres. Thumby thumbThumby thumbVor 2 Tage
  • Here is a secret. You cannot make a game which has it all. Otherwise you will be out of ideas and innovation for your next game. You will be less and less creative, like Ubisoft. Rockstar could have done everything you listed if not for this reason. It's a market.

    VatianVatianVor 11 Tage
    • That is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. No studio is like "ya thats an amazing idea and mechanic but lets wait for 10 years when we make the next game and have no idea what the gaming landscape will be like"

  • The level of effort in creating set pieces I believe can't be compared to many other games, so they had to strike a balance. If they had unlimited budget with no deadlines and developers who can work like machines then I guess it's theoretically possible, but as great as New Vegas is, porting over the kind of "choice" to RDR2 might not be so economically feasible. That said, it doesn't mean New Vegas is a worse game than RDR2, but rather a game that elevated itself in terms of truer freedom in an RPG. (Multi role, good-or-evil, RPG) RDR2 however is more of a single role (Good-or-evil Cowboy) RPG

    • @random raf I’m not buying on the whole “if the game is fun that’s all it matters” mentality since it’s used massive shield against criticism with some fans. The excuse of “Well I had fun so I don’t care about all the flaws” is a huge problem these days. If you enjoy this game good for you but you need to realize people’s problem about the game

    • @Ansh Patel How tf did you get the idea that I'm trying to force you into enjoying something you don't like? You guys are the ones saying things like "Oh I love the game but the structure, gameplay, campaign and every aspect of the game has deep flaws that makes me hate the whole thing". I mean, did you even like it? If something doesn't cater to every single one of your needs the thing is flawed? Come on you guys can't be that entitled and delusional. At the end of the day you're either having fun or not - and that's the only criteria you should care about.

  • It's not that their game design is outdated, it's that it's outright bad; massive swaths of negative space, a lack of depth, interplay, and dynamics were never acceptable. Keep in mind that we had games like Super Metroid more than 25 years ago that were so sharply-designed and nuanced that they're still being pushed to this day. And that's not even considering all of the ways in which cutscenes are the worst form of video game storytelling. Rockstar tells all of their "relevant" story through cutscenes because moment-to-moment gameplay decisions have little to no meaningful influence. And I say "relevant" in quotes because none of the pre-written narrative content has any influence on the gameplay experience.

  • In a rockstar game bully there was a mission call the tendements, and during a mini boss the correct way to do it is to attack him when you are in the arena, BUT you can lead him a broken wall, which you had to knock down with the bosses hammer, wait til he attacks and get out of the way, he will knock down the walls, do this for every wall and you get to the locations of the girls items, no mission fail, nothing they you knock him out to get out. And get this, the game takes place in a boarding school. Playing as a kid. Ironic that a with kids playing as a kid treat the player like an adult.

  • @9:20 I've been saying this to people for years, that while I get the appeal of Rockstar games, I never really like them because other games do open world better and they always feel half baked to me, they suffer heavily from "jack of all trades, master of none" syndrome. I realized this years ago when I was in 8th grade playing Vice City after it had just come out on my friends PS2. After getting over the appeal of "ooooh its GTA I definitely couldn't play this in front of MY parents" I realized that the game that was there, despite having some good pieces to its puzzle, didn't exactly add up to something greater than the sum of its parts.
